Single source v sole source
The UN Procurement Practitioner's Handbook, produced by the Interagency Procurement Working Group (IAPWG) in 2006 and updated in 2012 suggests that:
- Single source is the: ‘Procurement of products or services from one selected supplier, even though there are other suppliers that provide similar products or services.’
- Sole source is: ‘A procurement term employed when there is no competitive marketplace for the requirement, i.e. the product or service needed is available only from one source.’
